Roboticists are inspired by nature all the time to improve their designs. They study animals and plants to learn how to come up with more capable robots. This video from UC Berkley shows how Salto has been trained to jump and land like a squirrel.
Salto is a one-legged jumping robot. It has a flywheel that whirls like a human arm for balancing. The flywheel goes into reverse when Salto lands and the tension in the legs changes. These robots can be used for managing forests and explore low gravity bodies in space.
