Meet the Root: an interactive robot designed to develop coding abilities in children from an early stage. Root can be programmed and remotely operated from an iPad. It can drive on vertical surfaces, draw, erase, and sense its surroundings. It has a graphical programming interface but can be used as a stepping stone to Python, JavaScript, and Swift programming.

Wyss team developed a multi-level framework in which beginner programming activities start in a graphical, blocks-based environment, then smoothly transition into intermediate graphical and text hybrid interfaces, and ultimately advance to professionally-used text-based languages. This unique interface allows children to easily learn the basics and stay engaged with the Root system as their skills improve.
