We hear about robotic insects all the time. Plenty of roboticists are exploring this area. University of Washington have created RoboFly, which is a wireless flying robotic insect. The robot is slightly heavier than a toothpick and is powered by a laser beam.

The first wireless flying robotic insect takes off

RoboFly has a tiny circuit that converts laser energy into electricity to operate the wings. For now, the robot can fly and land. The team hopes to find a way to steer the laser, so RoboFly can hover and fly around.
