Security robots are getting more advanced all the time. The Picard security robot uses a smart PTZ camera to detect and track people. It can follow a person and zoom on their face. The camera takes a photo when a facial view becomes available for further recognition.
As SMP Robotics explain:
Non-frontal (e.g. side, profile) views are normally not used, as only frontal face image provides a reliable identification. By uploading only frontal images to the server, we reduce the amount of transferred data and the sever workload.
