Robots are already being used to work in areas hazardous to humans. Take the SCV robot for instance: it is a spent fuel check robot for inspection of nuclear plants. It is used to move the Improved Cerenkov Viewing Device across the surface of the nuclear spent fuel pond autonomously.
The robot helps protect inspectors from radiation. It is waterproof and can be handled by one person. It has 4 propellers, onboard camera, battery life of 5 hours, and speed of 20 cm/sec.
