This video from German Research Center for Artificial intelligence shows how robots can be taught with context-aware navigation to operate autonomously on farms. The robot AROX was used to demonstrate safe farm navigation with a smart map.

As Benjamin Kisliuk from the DFKI Laboratory Niedersachsen explains, the robot “operates with a map, in which the test area is divided into semantic zones based on satellite data and knowledge about the farm. These differ from each other based on the conditions that are applicable for the robot control – including the underground, the usage of the land as well as the presence of people, animals or cars. The control software receives commands for movement and calculates a path through the specific zone.”
