DARPA is always funding interesting projects to solve real problems. It is currently funding a cardboard drone that can deliver the goods without having to make a return. The drone is released in mid-air from a larger aircraft. It only has a mini computer and sensors to control where it travels.

As New Atlas explains, Aerial Platform Supporting Autonomous Resupply Actions can glide up to 55 miles away from their drop point after being released from 1000 feet. These drones biodegrade after a few days. The current model has a payload of 1 kg.
