In the future, we could use self-levitating, programmable displays for interaction with mid-air virtual objects. BitDrones are interactive flying microbots that could revolutionize how people interact with virtual reality. These drones are available in types: pixel, shape, and display drones. Here is how Queen’s professor Roel Vertegaal explained this project:
BitDrones brings flying programmable matter, such as featured in the futuristic Disney movie Big Hero 6, closer to reality .. It is a first step towards allowing people to interact with virtual 3D objects as real physical objects.
PixelDrones are equipped with one LED and a small dot matrix display. ShapeDrones serve as building blocks for complex 3D models. DisplayDrones have a curved flexible high resolution touchscreen, a video camera, and an Android smartphone board. The system also tracks the user’s hand motion and touch, allowing users to manipulate virtual objects. More information is available here.
