Atlas is one of the coolest robots Boston Dynamics has ever made. It is very agile and can perform somersaults and leaps. The company has shared a new video that shows how the robot can nail gymnastic routines. Atlas has 28 hydraulic joints and max speed of 1.5m/s.
As Boston Dynamics explains:
First, an optimization algorithm transforms high-level descriptions of each maneuver into dynamically-feasible reference motions. Then Atlas tracks the motions using a model predictive controller that smoothly blends from one maneuver to the next. Using this approach, we developed the routine significantly faster than previous Atlas routines, with a performance success rate of about 80%.
The robot has a lightweight design thanks to 3D printed parts.
